TSA Takes Pregnant Woman’s Insulin Vial at Denver Airport

TSA Confiscates Insulin

Has insulin become a prime suspect for the TSA?

As a type 1 diabetic who likes to travel, I’m aware of most of the various situations that can arise at airport security checkpoints.  So when my wife forwarded me a news story about a pregnant woman whose insulin was confiscated by the TSA at the Denver International Airport, I knew I had to share it.  You can find the whole story here at the Channel 7 Denver News web site.

Apparently, the TSA agent confiscated a vial of insulin and ice packs, claiming that they were an explosives risk.  The expecting mother-to-be says that she had a doctor’s note and that the insulin was labeled correctly.  However, it is not clear if “labeled correctly” means that the vial of insulin was in its prescription box or if it was only the loose vial that was present.

In any case, it’s certainly a situation that needs to be investigated.  After all, any of us who travel and are diabetic could end up at that same airport being screened by the same agent, not to mention other TSA agents who will hopefully take note of the potential mistake made by their coworker.

    That’s terrible! Poor lady :(

I’ve never had any problems at airports with regards to my diabetes, but you’re right! Like you said, there’s a possibility that the exact same thing could happen to any of us. Scary stuff!

Airport security: “We have to scan it or you will NOT fly. It’s safe.” me: “I don’t believe that. Have any tests been run (over time) to see that no odd cancers or illness will occur in the future?” Airport security: “NO!” So then…should we believe everything we’re told? NO! I don’t want my insulin or pens scanned but there’s nothing you can do about it.
